South Central Yearly Meeting Minute for Apartheid-Free Communities

On April 8, 2023, the following minute was passed:

South Central Yearly Meeting joins American Friends Service Committee (AFSC), Live Oak Friends Meeting and others in the “Apartheid-Free Communities” campaign. SCYM responds to AFSC’s and others’ call on faith congregations and communities as well as other communities and organizations to join in and declare themselves “Apartheid-Free”. As such:

We affirm our commitment to freedom, justice, and equality for the Palestinian people and all people;

We oppose all forms of racism, bigotry, discrimination, and oppression; and

We declare ourselves an Apartheid-free congregation and to that end;

We pledge to join others in working to end all support to Israel’s Apartheid regime, settler colonialism, and military occupation.

Furthermore, we ask that all monthly meetings in SCYM educate themselves on the legal definition of apartheid and the related reports from Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International, the Israeli human rights organization B’Tselem and others, all documenting in great detail how the practices perpetrated by Israeli leaders and their reports against Palestinians amount to the crime of apartheid. We also ask SCYM monthly meetings to consider joining other monthly meetings in signing on to the campaign.
